Oldtown tales

I went back to my birthplace, just because. Its been almost 2 years since I went back. One fine day, I randomly decided to grab my momma and my grandmomma and drive down to Ipoh. Ahh, has a nice ring to it, does it not? Ipoh, Ipoh!

I know some people find it weird how I've been smitten with this city. Truth is, I've always had a soft spot for this place. Since a child I would ask my dad as to why we could not live in Ipoh. So the sappy side of me oozes out as soon as I laid eyes on the prettiest view of the waterfalls which is visible from the highway. I remember as a kid, I used to make my dad drive extra slow at that stretch just so I could see it a little longer. I'm sappy like that!

Anyhoo.

We visited my grandma's neighbour whom I've known forever. Literally. I walk over to my grandmas house (which is currently being rented out to another tenant) and seek permission to sneak a peak. I walk in. Lo and behold, this wave of nostalgia washes over me without a warning. I remember those tiny green tiles, the pink kitchen my grandma loved so much and that wooden table my grandad used to sit at (god bless his soul). Everything seemed so familiar yet so strange. Someone else lives there now and I still can't come to terms with that. Yes, I'm emotional like that, sue me!

Besides all that jazz, I met a really pretty bunch of people from Ipoh. There's this crazy group, every single individual unique in their own special way. In no order of favouritism: Nahvin, Suba, Geraldine, Balakrishna, Balakumaran, Dhanan, Ashwin & Adrian. (This is me hoping I've not missed anyone else). They literally made my holiday there so perfect! I can't thank them enough!Honestly, people from that side of the country are just stuffed with awesomesauce! They're uber friendly!

Things about Ipoh (oh how I love the sound of it!) that tickles my fancy:

FOOD.
People, I swear on the mole on my right leg, the food in this town is so darn good! You could get sizeable portions for a decent price. Very decent price. The 'tauge chikin' is out of this world! It's like the mother of all 'tauge chikin'! I kid you not! Let's not forget the REAL oldtown! I'm not talking about the franchise shmanchise place. This is the 'shiznit' yo!

POLO GROUNDS.
I am going to build a nice little holiday home for my lovely self on polo grounds. Nothing anyone's gonna say is gonna change my mind! I t was the closest place in M'sia I found to Hamilton Gardens in NZ. Do not bother raining on my parade by saying I can't have my house there. I will! *wishful thinking*

TAMAN D.R.
This is where I spent a lot of my holiday evenings during my childhood. You could rent a bike for 50 cents and there were road signs and fake petrol kiosks etc. They should have one of those back here in KL.

MARKET ST.
I have my reasons for liking this street. It's just....NICE!

These are just a few of the reasons as to why I love my birthplace. I would love to move to Ipoh probably when they have a theatre scene there. OOooOOh, i'm gonna say that again... IPOH!

Ipoh peeps, you guys rawk my sawk! 'Nuff said!
