Green Travel and Volunteering

On a more serious note... an article I wrote recently

Globetrotters can now travel responsibly. What in the world are we talking about? Travelling green of course! We hear the terms ‘green travel’ and ‘eco tourism’ rather often but what does it actually mean? Tourism not only boosts the economy in their respective countries, but on the downside it also increases pollution and disruption of the ecosystem. This happens when people increase carbon footprints, litter and pollute their environment unknowingly as they travel. This has been even more apparent now especially with the increase in low cost carriers which make it even more accessible for tourists to travel.

Some examples of traveling green will be to book flights with only an e-ticket; for this reduces paper wastage as well as buying carbon emission offset credits while purchasing flight tickets. Those interested in green travelling should look into visiting places that are not overly commercialized and overrated as well as have lush, green, unblemished nature. Asia is a continent that is very rich in these aspects.

With the help of many governing bodies as well as other nature lovers, there are now volunteering programmes that allow travellers to go on a vacation while doing their part to save the environment. Tourists can volunteer at local communities and help in clean up projects around the area.

Green travel and volunteering are one of the best ways to travel, save the world one step at a time and leave an impact while gathering beautiful memories. Volunteers get a chance to give back to the community by helping others who are less fortunate. This can be achieved in many ways than one, for example helping out at community medical camps. Volunteers could also learn a lot about the culture and people of a particular community by helping out. They may also learn a language or two and make good friends along the way. This can be achieved by living with a host family. This will also work out cheaper for travellers. If one is lucky enough, they may be able to pick up a skill or a trade by working at places such as a farm or a stable. This will provide an experience which varies from the usual lifestyle of a tourist.

Travelers who intend to travel green while volunteering have to consider a few things beforehand. One of the main things is safety. Travelers have to be well equipped especially if the location they are going to is prone to certain diseases or illnesses. They also have to be careful while picking the location of travel. The deciding factor of the destination should not be due to the voluntary work instead it should be because of a personal choice.

Those interested in volunteering should take into account the cost of certain programmes. Some volunteering jobs are free of charge but some come with a price tag where volunteers actually pay to participate. These normally consist of food and lodging costs as well. Thus, this has to be considered especially by those wanting to travel on a shoestring budget. Some of the voluntary jobs are temporary while some of it have a fixed duration and schedule. Those wanting to get involved should compare different types of programmes in order to suit their own travel plans.

In short, travelling green and volunteering is no easy feat. Travellers should be clear about the programmes they are getting into and should not make rash decisions. Each and every criteria mentioned has to be taken into consideration so as not to upset travel plans and disappoint oneself. Travel safe, help save the environment and go green!
