I came across this lovely passage while reading the book. It's got such lovely meaning and innocence from a child's point of view of her parents' marriage.
"I didn't understand until I myself was grown how remarkable my parents' marriage was. The love between them was just a constant, something my sisters and brothers and I took for granted. It was there in the way they looked at each other, the way they teased each other and joked with each other, the way my mother reached out and gave my father's hand a quick, hard squeeze when he made her laugh. It was there in the way she deferred to him as undisputed head of the household, the way he never returned from a business trip without a gift for her. It was there in the way she applauded his every acheivement and the way he came rushing to tell her of every acheivement, as if it didn't become real or meaningful to him until he had shared it with her. We didn't see our parents touching a lot. I never saw them kiss. I never heard them tell each other they loved each other. However, I didn't have to hear them say it to know how much they did."
